How to Savor Champagne
Oct 14, 2024

Champagne is more than just a drink; it’s a symbol of celebration, luxury, and special moments. Whether you're marking an achievement, toasting to a new year, or simply indulging in a moment of joy, the experience of savoring Champagne is as much about the ritual as it is about the bubbles in your glass.

With Christofle’s exquisite collection of barware accessories, you can elevate every sip, turning the act of enjoying this iconic drink into a refined celebration. With our helpful tips, here’s how to savor Champagne with Christofle.

The Right Way to Pop the Bottle

Opening a bottle of champagne isn’t just a physical action—it's an experience, a tradition that marks the beginning of a celebration. Besides sabering a champagne bottle to open, you have the classic pop of the cork!
Here’s how to do it with finesse:

Step 1: Prepare the Bottle
Ensure the champagne is chilled but not too cold between 45°F and 50°F (7°C to 10°C). Place the bottle in an ice bucket for about 20 minutes before opening, stabilizing the temperature. This keeps the bubbles lively while preventing them from quickly escaping when the bottle is opened.

Step 2: Remove the Foil and Wire Cage
Once ready, remove the foil around the cork. Carefully loosen the wire cage, which keeps the cork in place. Keep your thumb on top of the cork while doing this to prevent the cork from popping prematurely.

Step 3: Hold the Bottle at an Angle
Instead of pointing the bottle directly upward, hold it at a 45-degree angle away from yourself and others. This angle allows for a more controlled pressure release, reducing the risk of champagne spilling out.

Step 4: Twist, Don’t Pull
Gently grip the cork with one hand and twist the bottle—not the cork—with the other hand. This slow, controlled movement will allow the cork to ease out with a quiet "whoosh" rather than a loud pop, which can disturb the bubbles. The goal is to release the pressure gently and gracefully.
Following these simple steps ensures a smoother, more elegant opening and preserves the effervescence that gives champagne its signature sparkle.
