Candleholders and candelabras from Christofle are exquisite decorative items that add elegance to any space. Whether crafted from durable stainless steel or luxurious sterling silver, these pieces require proper care to maintain their brilliance and extend their lifespan. Over time, exposure to candle wax, soot, and environmental elements can dull their shine, making regular cleaning essential. In this guide, we’ll explore the best practices for cleaning your Christofle stainless steel and sterling silver candleholders and candelabras, ensuring they remain radiant for years.
Remove Wax Residue: If wax has dripped onto the candle holder, gently scrape it off using a plastic scraper or a fingernail. Alternatively, place the piece in the freezer for about 30 minutes to harden the wax, making it easier to remove.
Wash with Soapy Water: Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Dip a soft microfiber cloth into the soapy water and wipe the entire surface. For intricate details, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to reach crevices.
Rinse and Dry: Rinse thoroughly with clean, warm water to remove any soap residue. Immediately dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.
Deep Clean with Vinegar or Baking Soda (if needed): To remove stubborn stains or fingerprints, dampen a cloth with white vinegar and wipe the surface. Alternatively, create a paste using baking soda and water, apply it to the stain, and gently rub before rinsing.
Polish for Extra Shine: Use a high-quality stainless steel polish to enhance the shine. Apply a small amount to a clean cloth and buff in circular motions. Wipe it down with a dry microfiber cloth to ensure a streak-free finish.
Remove Wax Residue: If wax has dripped onto the sterling silver or silver-plated candelabra, gently remove it with your fingernail or a plastic scraper. For stubborn wax, place the piece in the freezer for about 30 minutes to harden it before carefully lifting it away.
Dust the Surface: Wipe the candelabra with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust and surface particles before cleaning.
Wash Gently: Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Dampen a soft cloth with the soapy water and gently clean the surface, avoiding prolonged soaking.
Clean Detailed Areas: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or cotton swab to reach decorative details, crevices and candle cups.
Rinse and Dry Immediately: Rinse carefully with clean warm water, then dry thoroughly with a soft microfiber cloth to prevent water spots and tarnishing.
Polish the Silver: Unlike stainless steel, sterling silver and silver-plated pieces naturally tarnish over time and require more delicate care. While stainless steel can generally be cleaned with soap and water alone, silver benefits from a dedicated silver polish to restore its shine and prevent oxidation. Apply the polish with a soft cloth using gentle circular motions.
Final Touch: Buff the candelabra with a clean, dry polishing cloth for a bright, streak-free finish. Store in a dry place to help limit tarnishing.
Here are a few essential steps to keep your candleholders and candelabras in pristine condition:
Regular Dusting: Wipe down your pieces with a soft cloth weekly to prevent buildup.
Use Dripless Candles: This minimizes wax residue and makes cleaning easier.
Handle with Clean Hands: Oils and dirt from hands can accelerate tarnishing on silver.
Store Properly: Keep silver pieces in anti-tarnish pouches and avoid exposure to excessive humidity.
Polish Occasionally: Periodic polishing will help maintain their original brilliance.
