ONE MOOD SET CREATED BY THE LATE  DESIGNER TO BE OFFERED AT AUCTION FOR CHARITY

Fashion luminary Karl Lagerfeld was a longtime collector of Christofle, as evidenced by numerous pieces featured in his estate sales at Sotheby’s in 2021. In 2018, shortly before his passing, Lagerfeld collaborated with Christofle on the brand's signature MOOD silverware set, imbuing the distinctive egg-shaped case and flatware with a graphic, Art Deco-inspired pattern rendered in mirror-polished silver and glossy black lacquer. Only 1,500 pieces were created—1,000 with a stainless-steel case and just 500 in black lacquer—and all sold out upon their release.

But, on the occasion of The Metropolitan Museum of Art's retrospective of Lagerfeld's life and work, Christofle has sourced the last known Karl Lagerfeld MOOD set and is making it available at auction, with proceeds going to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) to endow the next generation of fashion creatives.

A numbered edition 25/500, the piece being offered is one of the especially rare versions in black lacquer, engraved with Christofle's coat of arms as well as Lagerfeld's signature. Once opened, the sleek egg-shaped case reveals a 24-piece set of silver-plated flatware in an elegant pattern that can go between formal entertaining and everyday gatherings. The design's sophisticated simplicity bears all the hallmarks of Lagerfeld's work. To commemorate the collaboration’s release in 2018, the multi-hyphenate Lagerfeld photographed a self-portrait of himself with the black lacquer MOOD.

First introduced in 2015, the MOOD collection has become one of Christofle’s best-sellers. Conceived as both a decorative objet d’art and a functional set of silverware, MOOD is defined by a contemporary approach to entertaining—rather than setting the table, guests can select cutlery at their leisure. The flatware’s clean, modern silhouette give the collection considerable versatility. For his take on MOOD, Lagerfeld chose to engrave the cutlery with fine geometric lines, mirroring the design etched onto the ovoid case’s exterior, as well as a discreet emblem of the iconic designer’s profile.
